Implementing SEO

Now that you have made your site plan (you did right?), you can focus on the meat of SEO (Search Engine Optimization): The content. With search engines, content is king. The more you have, the better you will rank and the more visitors that will make it to your site. In the Introduction, we covered some of the basic aspects of SEO, now we’re going to go into more detail.

Implementing SEO Strategy

Keywords

As discussed earlier, keywords are the words which users input into a search engine to find the information they are looking for. When creating your content, you should keep in mind the keywords that are likely to become associated with the topic of your page and use them liberally throughout the page. Also it is a good idea to research popular search engine keywords to help you define your chosen topic.

Here are some general guidelines in using your keywords while describing your topic:

  • Heading – Use the keyword you are targeting in the <h1> tag at least once and in the <h2> and <h3> tags a couple of times. This gives the keyword some “weight”.
  • Bold – Find a way to make your keyword bold at least once on the page and as many times as you can without making the page too tacky for your human visitors.
  • Italic – Again, use your keyword italicized as much as possible
  • Normal – Just use your keyword. The more the merrier. Just remember not to upset your human visitors! You will need them later....

Keyphrase

The Keyphrase is the heaviest of the search tools. If you can figure out what someone looking for your site might query the search engine with, using it in the same manner as keywords will dramatically increase your ranking in the search engines.

Content

Content, content, content. The more you have, the more likely that people, and search engine spiders will come to your site. Spend time researching some popular keywords which are relevant to the topic of your site and start writing.

General page guidelines:

  • Page length – Pages should contain around 500 words, this is not set in stone, but it will give you plenty of room to sprinkle those keywords around.
  • Pictures – Pictures can give a bit of clarity to a topic, but it can also slow down the page.
  • Name – Give it a name which will help SEO, as a bonus your human visitors are more likely to remember it as well.

Also when writing, remember to capture the users attention. Nothing captures a set of scanning eyes like a bold statement. Just remember not to make it too tacky or the user is likely to move on to a more appealing site.
